Marlin 39a serial number dates.

Today, I purchased a used Marlin 39A. I've seen a number of these that have on the barrel, "Golden 39A". The one I bought says, "Original Golden 39A" and is highlighted in gold. Based on the serial number, it was made in 1977. What is the significance of the difference in the two model designations and gold highlighted lettering?

I have a 1957 39A with the letter "P" (early 1957) in the serial number, plainly struck and not a partial "R" (late 1957). I don't see it on your list but did find it over at the Marlin Firearms Collector Association site. On their list compared to yours between 1957 and 1964 there are several lettered differences as noted.Any 1887 marlin gun, as far as my research shows, would have no letter prefix. The Genfield's used the same serial numbers as the Marlin's. The model 57, might have a 2 letter code on the barrel, if so you can go to the part on the serial number sheets, that says Non 39A's 22's. The formula is 100-the first 2 digits of the serial # (100-08 =92) They are really nice rifles!
