I have a buddy that has an original Ruger American in .308, trigger was spongy, but I hear they've upgraded. Haven't fired a newer one to compare. Another buddy has a Mossy Patriot in 30-06, he's thinking of selling it. The best it shoots is 2 inch groups at 100 yds. Go to a Boyd's stock, put a muzzle brake on if it doesn't handle 308 with a light stock, oversize charging handle if the action doesn't break in well. You can see people shooting the axis up to 1500yds. I'm only going to need 200yds max where I live. Looking to get back into deer hunting this fall. Last gun I had was a youth .243 rifle.It pains me to say this, because I'm a huge Savage fan, but I'd choose the Ruger American out of those two. The trigger on the Axis is horrible (the Axis II acc-trigger is much better), the bolt handle feels cheap, the stock is extra flimsy and cheap feeling, etc. The rifles shoot, but they are just very cheap feeling overall.

Have 2 of them, and they can't be beat for the price imo. Other features include: A 20inch med weight 1/10 twist bbl. Oversize bolt knob.The Howa 1500 is in a different market niche. For the $$$ the Savage Axis or Ruger American are hard to beat. The 1500 is a nicer/better made rifle. It is nice to have some many great choices.
