Reason for pulling - hard to shift out of reverse. Been that way for a while, my first time pulling / attempting a clutch rebuild. Gator is about 700hrs. Deere could have not had this problem if they would have just put a spring in there to lower engagement pressure. MBDiagMan.Anyway, it’s nearly impossible to shift when it is idling. You have to shut it off and just hold your foot on the brake and start it in gear. It’s been like this for a while because all switches and safety devices have been bypassed. it shifts fine. Peggy, Look at the picture in post number 2 above. At the upper left of the picture the forward reverse lever is pointed out. Shift it into neutral with the engine stopped. I've had a THD6x4 for 15 years. I'm on my 2nd belt. I've pulled massive loads up 30+% hills. I've done likewise with a log tote. I've locked the axles and pulled crazy stuff. I've smelled the belt. I've had to shut down due to engine overheat. I've kind of pushed the limit many times. But my "clutch" is fine.

I have the same problem. I had the clutch changed out last year. It cost $710 to change the clutch and fix one of the headlights. I got John Deere to refund me $412. I got the gator out Saturday had not rode it since March. The clutch and shifting is hard to shift again.

I've got an older 4x2 Gator that runs great, except for the fact that gear engagement (forward or reverse) usually results in a crunching or grinding in the gearbox, not always, but 90% of the time. Once in gear, it doesn't tend to want to creep and as rpm's rise the clutch engages cleanly and smoothly.

No. That clutch set up on that machine is a loose belt. However, if you are in Neutral, and the clutch is spinning fast enough to engage it, then yes it will turn the belt. Ideally, the belt should NOT be turning at idle.
