Don't group your soldiers up, especially against Mutons or Thin Men. You'll get pelted with rockets, grenades, clouds of poison, etc. Do not underestimate the power of explosives. Grenades are garaunteed damage, if your options are a 40% shot or a grenade don't be afraid to chuck the nade, especially early game.
