It would act as if not getting fuel like a vapor lock. AFter a while it would start back up. I had been told once by a ute racer that the check valve/tank breather that comes out of the tank and is in line on the right side rear would do that. The needle seat has a small screen and it was plugged only letting a small amout of fuel into the bowl. Most of the jets were clear but I still used music wire and air to clear any blockages.

It's probably the spring loaded gear selector fork under the shifter assy behind the rear head. it's VERY easy for one side of that spring mechanism to fall off when assembling. this way you don't get a full throw when putting it in gear with the hand shifter.

The bearings are usually about the last thing to fail on a Prairie 400. I would check the cam chain tightener and adjust it according to the manual. Set the valve lash to proper clearances, as I would guess it is overdue too.
